in memory of tom

Thomas J. Law
11 September 1943 - 29 August 2002

Tom was a founding member of inter alia.

He enhanced our collective translations and our record collections. He spent hours, days, weeks trying to arrange a meeting with the elusive Uta. He bought us piles of croissants, muffins, cookies (and occasionally forgot the main ingredient). He wrote us epic e-mails about Brigitte, the canaries and the postwoman. And like Captain Kirk, he was always ready to "get the hell out of this quadrant and have a tasty breakfast".

Most of all, he made us laugh.

We miss him.

Lieutenant Uhura

"Uhura was far more than an intergalactic telephone operator. As head of Communications, she commanded a corps of largely unseen communications technicians, linguists, and other specialists who worked in the bowels of the Enterprise, in the 'comm-center.' [She was] a linguistics scholar and a top graduate of Starfleet Academy, [...] the sole crew member with a vast knowledge of alien languages and communications technology.[...] And her name, Uhura is derived from Uhuru, which is Swahili for 'freedom.'"

from: Nichelle Nichols* Beyond Uhura: Star Trek and Other Memories
